Write a letter to the editor in three easy steps | Healthy Oceans | Oceans | Our projects | Healthy Oceans | Issues

Canada has the longest coastline of any country. Issues facing coastal waters should be included in election discussion and debates. Oceans provide food, recreation and economic and cultural opportunities that face multiple threats, including pollution, climate change and ocean acidification. Protecting our oceans benefits all Canadians. The air we breathe and climate stability are strongly linked to ocean health.Climate change is affecting oceans. Federal action to meet commitments to protect the oceans is more important than ever as communities are forced to adapt to sea-level rise, ocean acidification and changes in seasonal weather.Canada is failing to meet its protection commitments. Only one per cent of Canada’s marine area is protected, far from the 10 per cent promised by 2020 (UN Convention on Biological Diversity).
